Whoops for got to stick one of these here. My bad. Let me know how I'm doing with Rai. Is he good? Is there something missing? Hit me up, I don't bite, all I ask is you're polite.

Also this is a good place to just hit me up for comments and questions for plotting and anything else. Comments are screened.

» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Raimundo Pedrosa
Canon & MEDIUM: Xiaolin Showdown; Cartoon
Canon PULL-POINT: End of season three.
Character AGE: I had to do some guessing, but I've basically figured that the entire series takes place over at least two years. So thirteen at the start of the series and fifteen, almost sixteen at the end is what I'm going with.

Character ABILITIES:

Rai is been trained the last few years as a Xiaolin warrior. As such he's an exceptional martial artist. His style and movement are a mix between flying trapeze and breakdancing which amounts to: Good luck catching him. Currently he is the highest ranking among his team.

As a Xioalin Dragon in training, Rai also has power over the element of wind. With this he can do a great number of things such as unleash Wind-based attacks, summon whirlwinds, and even fly. Combining these abilities with certain Shen Gong Wu his power is upped exponentially.

In addition to all the chosen one stuff and the intense training Rai is also a very clever kid. Not only does he have a great deal of street smarts from growing up in Rio behind him, but he's also recently shown to have great talent in strategics and leading. Before he was promoted to team leader and a Shoku warrior, he was shown to be able to come up with successful battle plans completely on the spot.

Character HISTORY: Wiki has a pretty good section.

Character PERSONALITY:

Rai is a pretty complex dude. Over the course of the series he is one of the characters that's grown the most in terms of maturity and skill.

At first Rai was the usual teenager. He was a bit lazy, materialistic and kind of a jerk. He was the sort to find a shortcut through chores or training or complain about how small his room was at the temple. He was also the one to de-pants Omi upon first meeting him for a couple of laughs and pick fun at Clay because he didn't have a fast martial arts style. He has a very sarcastic sense of humor and can be quite underhanded too when he wants to be. Growing up in Rio made him very street smart and one of the least naive of the group.

But a lot of that is just surface. Under all the joking around and snarkiness Rai is determined and a serious fighter. He's someone who hates backing down from a challenge and hates anyone getting the better of him. He's headstrong and stubborn and that often has him biting off more than he can chew. He also easily butts heads with authority and he'll often go against orders if he feels that doing so will be for the greater good. He is someone who wants to do his best and prove he's good enough to be one of the Xiaolin Dragons.

For a long time Rai battled against a lot of his own insecurities and it was one of the leading things holding him back from the others. He didn't take well to anyone belittling him no matter the circumstance and often seriously lashed out at others for giving him sympathy (or whatever it was Omi called 'helping'.) His inferiority complex was one of the things that caused him to switch over to the Heylin side for a short time, for example. But in very recent episodes it's shown that he's been able to admit and come to terms with this side of himself and because of that, Rai was really able to improve and step up.

So much so that he was elected team leader of the group in the final episode and promoted to the next level of Xiaolin Warrior first above the others. Rai was shown to have a huge talent in strategy and planning that wasn't shown much in the rest of the series. (Though it was revealed he played chess and played well.) That combined with some new found confidence in his own fighting ability impressed Master Fung so much that he was given leadership and surpassed even Omi.

A lot of the old!Rai is still there so to speak, but not to the extent that it was at the beginning. His confidence being boosted with his new title and abilities irons a lot of his laziness and impatience out but that doesn't mean he won't still yank down Omi's pants from time to time.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: While Rai does have a signature weapon, I want to be difficult and give him something new to work with while not straying overly far from what he's shown to use in canon. So he'd pick up a nunchuck. Which, seeing as his previous weapon was a sword that could basically turn into the same weapon with windy perks, isn't really that far off. (He seems to be a fan of swords most of the time but he never uses them in a way that swords are used. His other favorite weapon is easily the sword of the storm which when spun around, it creates whirlwinds, so there you go. He likes to come off intimidating, but when you get down to it, he doesn't seem to be a fan of lethal weapons.)

So, starting off normal nunchucks, which are hard on their own to master, and then evolving to like say having an extendable chain lengh, making them a long range weapon (like a flail) as well as a good way to create whirlwinds (by spinning them around fast enough). I also kind of like the image of him using it like a makeshift grappling hook so he can be batman and sneak around everywhere.

Chosen SKILLSET: Rai is a fighter through and through. Even if he has leadership going for him, he'd much rather be on the field getting his own hands dirty than sitting back and letting someone else do it. He stubborn and determined and he's got the skill and muscle to back himself up.

» SAMPLES
First PERSON: [It's a video post. Really, like Rai was going to bother taking the time to type shit out when talking was so much more productive.]

So this seems like the thing to do here. [he pokes and prods a bit at the netbook]

Look, I appreciate that you think I'm cool enough to be dragged into your war or whatever, and I'm all for helping if this place is really in serious trouble. I'm not about to diss a call for help, yo.

But I've got a team back home and they kind of need me. [And you know, he needs them.]

So let's be fair here, I'm not askin' for much. Lemme make a call home or something. I mean you pulled me here with temporal time shenanigans, I'm sure you can conjure a magical time-space cellphone no problemo, right?

Unless you've got them already here. In which case, we're straight.

Omi? Kimiko? Clay?

Third PERSON:

It was one thing to be thrust into a situation where he would have to go through the motions of saving the world from an impending doom. He did it all the time. It was apart of his job description.

It was another enitrely to be dragged here alone, without his team, into a world where there were NO shen gong wu and none of the evil doers were familiar. At least, he could take comfort in that he could still feel his element. He still had some kind of weapon, and that these people, whoever they were, they needed his help. Help, he could do. If he was putting the beat down on something foul and nefarious, he could deal.

It was a distraction at least, until he figured out what he was going to do. He'd yet to see his friends, and- while he wasn't about to go and turn tail on these people, he also wanted to make sure he knew he was working for the right side. He wasn't gullible like say, Omi. He wasn't going to assume everything was as they've said. He knew better than that, and he'd had enough of side flipping to last him a life time.

Well, there you have it Rai. Your first big freaking test as team leader and you're all alone. That would just figure. Nervous? Oh yes, but if it was one thing he decided on since everything went down back home, is that he wouldn't dare give them a reason to doubt Master Fung's decision.

He'd regained their trust finally. He was going to make them proud.

Because I am not nerdy enough to come up with extensive background for a cartoon, I have to also take the dream sequence episode and analyze his head. What am I even.

For those curious, you can find that part of the episode here.

A little intro. Episode 47 is called The Dream Stalker. Basically Hannibal is butthurt because Rai gave him the double-cross in the previous episode and plots a way to really fuck things up. He goes into Rai's head, and uses a physical manifestation of Rai's deepest darkest fears to attack the monks every time he falls asleep. During this episode we get a look inside Rai's head and it reveals a shocking amount of insight to his character.

The scene opens up with him walking into a large familiar game room. The same one Wuya gave him back when he switched sides. One one hand it looks to be just showing how extravagant and sometimes materialistic Rai is by using this as something he would find relaxing but this is really driving home the fact that he's never forgotten switching sides. Further proving this importance, he's dressed in the same clothes as season one. The persistence of this memory shows Rai hasn't forgotten or let it go. It's something he undoubtedly carries a lot of guilt for, especially when we see it referenced so much so much later in the series.

Next, he sees Kimiko dressed up in her formal kimono, which seems to be hinting that Rai finds her attractive. He liked her in that kimono more than he let on originally, despite his teasing. Then, suddenly it changes to Wuya, instead. Further smacking him with his mistakes with how easily he was seduced over. This also could be that Rai finds Wuya to be a sexy bitch and he would not be alone!! But I imagine the physical aspect of this to be less important than his waffling over the good and evil side.

When the camera shows Rai again, his hood is up, much like he wore it while he was on the heylin side. Again, this reinforces how Rai seems to be constantly stuck on that particular time in his life.

Next his 'fear' speaks to him, and shows him a mirror with a much larger, older version of himself. A vision of who he wishes to be. The image changes into a small, child version of himself. This is supposed to be the true image of the part of him that feels fear. His younger self, holding on to ninja fred. It's notable that Rai sleeps with his bear even at his age, and it shows him holding it briefly.

And then something interesting happens. Rai's clothes change to that of Jack Spicer's as he denies to his younger self that he is his fear. Hannibal decides to make his appearence, telling Rai that "Looking at yourself isn't easy when you don't like what you see." This is kind of a loaded metaphor. Jack Spicer and Raimundo are foils of one another. Jack Spicer is a self proclaimed villian who does everything he can to be notorious and evil when the reality of it is that he's awful at it. He's a good guy and he can't stand it. He did so much better as a good guy and is scares him. This is all true for Rai, only in opposite. He's desensitized and jaded far beyond the other monks. He's essentially bad at being good. being underhanded comes so much easier to him and it bothers him. Jack is someone he can see himself in and that scares the shit out of him. Which of course is what most of the sequence is trying to nail into Rai.

The beach scene is next, and interestingly enough Tubby AND Jack are both there. He see's his friends, but when he tries to run towards them, they get farther away. Leaving him on the side of the beach with the villains. Tubby is an obvious reference to his first pride-wounding loss. A loss that happened simply because he had slacked off and not paid attention when he was supposed to. Despite making up for this loss, like everything else, these sorts of things never leave Rai's thoughts. He's pretty hard on himself.

After Hannibal interrupts again, the scene changes to a theater. Once again we see Jack a few rows back, and then Kimiko sitting right next to him. Jack never seems to leave his field of vision. With Kimiko this again enforces that he might have some kind of crush on her, as we see where his arm was once it pans back and Kimiko's replaced by a jellyfish. The screen in the theatre is playing various scenes of Rai's successes, though that is mostly ruined when the jellyfish shows up, and consequently, his fear shows up again too. Once again Hannibal appears and meddles.

The next few sequences are mostly Hannibal taunting him with what he's been able to figure out about Rai's insecurities: He's afraid he's not good enough to be a Xiaolin Dragon. He of course, drags it to the surface in the most disturbing way he can. The image in the mirror of half his face as Hannibal's of course is always his way of trying to dredge up his fall from good, by comparing the two and suggesting they are one in the same. Or at least, Rai is on that path.

His inner self makes another appearance, though, this time Rai seems to be much more accepting of its existence, trying to calm it down. Its now he finally admits that he is, in fact, afraid.

HEADCANON

xiaolindragon: (pic#2841827)
IMA DO THE HEADCANON MEME DERP DERP because Rai has a vague background and his canon in general leaves a lot of things open to interpretation. holy crap i can't type tonight i'll fix all of this later or something.

1. Family things! The only thing Canon mentions about Rai's family and background is that he has eight brothers and sisters and he implies that he has a lot of aunts and uncles, too. It also mentions briefly that he's familiar with the rougher part of his hometown, Rio de Janeiro. So, I'm thinking that, given his family is so huge, they're not exactly in the best situation financially. Not that they're super poor either (since they were able to send Rai gifts to China on Chinese New Year) but not rich enough to live in like. a cozy suburb of some kind.

2. Delving further into family things, as far as siblings go, Rai is probably one of the younger middle kids. One of the reasons he probably got so many gifts is because a majority of his siblings are much older than him and are able to go out and buy stuff. Also, I think that if Rai were somehow the oldest, he would probably have a harder time leaving his family as opposed to how well he seemed to be with moving all the way to China to train at a temple.

Another thing I want to touch on is how he seems to know his way around the run down part of town. While he wasn't the worst off financially, I think that because Rai was sort of a middle kid in the sea of a big family, he felt overlooked and maybe even ignored. Not that it was anyone's fault, but its hard to give all the attention where its needed when there's so many. I've no doubt his house was like a constant madhouse of people coming and going, be they family or otherwise.

Since Rai couldn't get the attention at home, he probably rebelled and took to the streets. Became one of those tough, street punks that picked fights and raised hell for fun. He probably didn't ever do anything too bad but he wasn't a saint either. But hey, as long as the family never found out, he didn't mind. He was more than just a number out on the streets anyways.

3. Rai probably didn't pay a whole lot of attention to school and probably skipped when he could. He got a majority of his education on the streets and from family. He was someone that definitely couldn't be bothered with authority talking down to him so he constantly butted heads with teachers.

4. He learned how to play chess from one of his older siblings when he was pretty young. He was good at it! But uh, never ever told anyone ever.

5. This was probably the same sibling that gave him Ninja Fred (His teddy bear that he sleeps with every night 8|) as a baby and Rai never ever let it go.

6. Yes, he sleeps with a teddy bear. No, he can't get to sleep without it unless under extreme exhaustion. Rai hasn't been sleeping well in Death City and it will probably soon start to show.

7. When it comes to his more shady side, Rai knows its there. He knows he's not on the same moral pedestal as the other monks and he's okay with that. In fact he knows its an advantage over others because one, bad guys don't expect it, and two, it means he's willing to do things that might need to be done, that the other monks wouldn't cross into. He wants to keep it that way. He cares a lot for the others, and he'd cross any line to make sure they didn't have to. (A good example of this is when he offered to drink the evil!soup to get the others free.) It's kind of his way of being protective.

8. He will probably never stop feeling bad for the time he switched to the Heylin side. Sure, everything turned out okay in the end and the others accepted him back, but the fact still remains that he nearly single-handedly sent the world into ten thousand years of darkness. This included setting Wuya free, nearly getting his friends killed, and betraying everyone and everything for material gain.

All because of his wounded pride.

He still feels like he hasn't made up for this yet, despite his battle won over his insecurities. This is one he'll probably never rid himself of, and he's not sure he ever wants to. It's his own personal reminder that he really fucked up.

9. This is why being leader is such a big goddamn deal to him. He wanted it, of course, and really hoped for it, but that didn't mean he was expecting to get it. Not completely anyways. Despite his obvious merit in battle, he still feels like maybe he's not quite there yet.

Which is why he's going to try and work his ass off to make sure he does a good job. Now, more than ever, he doesn't want to let the others down.

10. Rai remembers his alternate history from the last episode. It's basically like have two lives crammed into one head. One timeline followed the actual known events of the series, and the second followed this, with the exception of Chase not becoming evil and the change of events that was the result of ths. At the end of the series, the two timelines collapsed and merged into one another to become the 'right' timeline. Aka the one where Chase is still evil.

In this alternate timeline, Chase, having not become the evil bastard we all know and love, was something of a mentor figure to the monks, especially after Master Fung was lost to the Yin Yang world. Rai probably really looked up to the guy! Probably butted heads with him a few times BUT LOOKED UP TO HIM. And he remembers things from this. Not everything mind you, but important parts.

Having these random not!memories surface makes him feel really conflicted about Chase. It's one of the main reasons he's being such an asshole too him in Death City. He doesn't want to deal with these conflicting thoughts so he just lashes out at him. Provoking him would make it easier for him to punch him in the face.

Not to mention a part of him is kind of bitter that things had to turn out the way they did. That to essentially save everything Chase still had to be evil. They should have been able to figure out another way. He should have drank the soup.

But there's nothing he can do about it. Only, you know. Troll Chase and hope maybe it gets easier. 8|
