↪ depth.
history: Overview of the series by season And on Raimundo specifically.
personality:
Rai is a pretty complex dude. Over the course of the series he is one of the characters that's grown the most in terms of maturity and skill.
At first Rai was the usual teenager. He was a bit lazy, materialistic and kind of a jerk. He was the sort to find a shortcut through chores or training or complain about how small his room was at the temple. He was also the one to de-pants Omi upon first meeting him for a couple of laughs and pick fun at Clay because he didn't have a fast martial arts style. He has a very sarcastic sense of humor and can be quite underhanded too when he wants to be. Growing up in Rio made him very street smart and one of the least naive of the group.
But a lot of that is just surface. Under all the joking around and snarkiness Rai is determined and a serious fighter. He's someone who hates backing down from a challenge and hates anyone getting the better of him. He's headstrong and stubborn and that often has him biting off more than he can chew. He also easily butts heads with authority and he'll often go against orders if he feels that doing so will be for the greater good. He is someone who wants to do his best and prove he's good enough to be one of the Xiaolin Dragons.
For a long time Rai battled against a lot of his own insecurities and it was one of the leading things holding him back from the others. He didn't take well to anyone belittling him no matter the circumstance and often seriously lashed out at others for giving him sympathy (or whatever it was Omi called 'helping'.) His inferiority complex was one of the things that caused him to switch over to the Heylin side for a short time, for example. But in very recent episodes it's shown that he's been able to admit and come to terms with this side of himself and because of that, Rai was really able to improve and step up.
So much so that he was elected team leader of the group in the final episode and promoted to the next level of Xiaolin Warrior first above the others. Rai was shown to have a huge talent in strategy and planning that wasn't shown much in the rest of the series. (Though it was revealed he played chess and played well.) That combined with some new found confidence in his own fighting ability impressed Master Fung so much that he was given leadership and surpassed even Omi.
A lot of the old!Rai is still there so to speak, but not to the extent that it was at the beginning. His confidence being boosted with his new title and abilities irons a lot of his laziness and impatience out but that doesn't mean he won't still yank down Omi's pants from time to time.
abilities: Rai is been trained the last few years as a Xiaolin warrior. As such he's an exceptional martial artist. He's also the only one of the four that's risen to the level of Shoku warrior so far.
As a Xioalin Dragon in training, Rai also has power over the element of wind. With this he can do a great number of things such as unleash Wind-based attacks, summon whirlwinds, and even fly. Combining these abilities with certain Shen Gong Wu his power is upped exponentially.
In addition to all the chosen one stuff and the intense training Rai is also a very clever kid. Not only does he have a great deal of street smarts from growing up in Rio behind him, but he's also recently shown to have great talent in strategics and leading. Before he was promoted to team leader and a Shoku warrior, he was shown to be able to come up with successful battle plans completely on the spot.
weaknesses: Girls. Most definitely girls. maybe to a lesser extent now but a pretty girl always has Rai turning the other way. You would think after the first few times the enemy took advantage of this he would learn but 8|
Also, what remains of his insecurities. Now that he's leader he wants to do everything he can to make sure he does a good job and he doesn't want the others to lose faith in him. He'll be a little prone small bouts of self-doubt.
Annnd there's also the fact that he's still human. He's a bit stronger than the normal teenager but that doesn't mean he's indestructible, immune to making mistakes, nor does he have the experience fighting or in general that someone twice his age would.
other information: So, to explain a little bit about the world and the whole reason Rai and his friends are running around and fighting evil and such. Basically it comes down to these magical artifacts, called shen gong wu. There's hundreds of them, they're scattered all over the world, and they all do something different. The Eye of Dashi, for instance, shoots lighting. There's another will allow you to breath underwater, or one that creates a two ton armor tunic. They can even grant time travel or mind control. They are basically limitless and terrible if in the wrong hands.
So its in the manner that lead to Rai getting dropped into prolecto two years older than he was originally. Some horrific combination of dimension hopping (which a shen gong wu can do) and time fuckery (again, still possible).
I suppose that also brings up the question of if I can assume he has one or two of these such items, excluding his weapon of choice (Crest of the Condor being a piece of armor on his shoulder that channels his element and the Blade of the Nebula which is a sword that actually turns into windy nunchucks. Yeah I never said shen gong wu made a lot of sense but there you go.)
I mostly ask because the items can be kind of hax.
↪ samples.
first person sample: Link! for this one.
third person sample: Well.
Okay no, he really did not have a snappy, sarcastic or otherwise response to this situation. Which, if you knew Rai, was a pretty big deal.
The best he could do right then was backtrack a bit, figure out what the crap just happened. They were on a mission, nothing unusual. They were hunting some ridiculous shen gong wu, still normal. Kicking Jack's pathetic ass, good. There was a showdown, blah blah blah, and then something crazy happened with the wu they were fighting over. The Sands of Time.
Bingo.
That stupid piece of temporal junk was always mucking up their business. So, what. He'd suddenly growth spurted and then got spat out into some freakish dimension that really did not look a thing like home? Yeah, okay, sure.
Rai could buy that. He wasn't happy about it though, oh hell no.
He had somewhere he needed to be. He hadn't been made leader for long, he couldn't just check out on his team. They were depending on him and the last thing he needed was to vanish and then they all lose faith in him again. Back to square one, back to being the brunt of everyone's jokes for not being good enough. No, he'd earned his right and their trust and he'll be damned before he screws it all up again.
So that was that. He needed to go find the chump in charge of this dump and kick some answers out of them.
Or maybe just kick them, he would be happy with that too.
